30th Annual Field Day – SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 2024

Mite-Tolerant Honey Bee Queens & Commercial Beekeeping
Randy Oliver & Ray Olivarez

Field Day is a Free Event for Everyone!
By June 1, 2024, winter is over and the 2024 package bee/nuc season is in the history books. Supers are in place and the 2024 honey flow is in full swing, so what better time to take a break. We have a great idea for a midseason smash. Set the day aside to attend the 30th Annual LCBA and QRC Field Day. Come bring your whole family for a great day of bees, education, food and fun.

For 30 years QRC has partnered with LCBA to bring the best of the best to Ohio, and this year is no different. In celebration of three decades of educating beekeepers at this great event, we have chosen not one, but TWO featured guest speakers.

Kicking off the event will be keynote speaker Randy Oliver of Golden West Queens. Randy will be speaking on his mite-tolerant queen project. The icing on the cake will be guest speaker, Ray Olivarez from Olivarez Honey Bees speaking on commercial beekeeping. Having these two very sought after and informative speakers at the same event is an opportunity you will not want to miss.

We have something different this year: Peer Beekeeping Lessons: three breakout sessions in rapid succession. The goal is to have hard-hitting, point-on, no-nonsense, 15-minute classes with your peers. These three lessons will cover queen introduction, hive evaluation, and queen evaluation in one hour’s time. Each lessons will repeat three times in one hour, every 15 minutes. You can take all three lessons or repeat them as many times as you wish, up to three times, to make sure you understand the subject matter. There will be time after the one-hour period to ask questions, if you wish. The plan is to use open hives for these lessons, but this will depend on the presenter and their comfort level.

Swarm control is a must for urban dwellers and can be useful to all beekeepers. This year we have the pleasure of having Chris Merkel, a long-time member of Tri-County Beekeepers Association. He is a third-generation beekeeper, who has kept 10 to 20 hives in Orrville, Ohio, for the past 52 years. As part of the Peer Beekeeping Lessons, Chris will be instructing a live demo on swarm prevention and control.

We expect to have a large crowd, so come early. If you don’t feel like packing, lunch will be available at a minimum cost. Farm tours Alpaca shearing, petting zoo – lots to see and do. Free event, so bring the whole family, including Uncle Joe and Aunt May.
