Oxalic Acid Ratio changes per EPA Approval
It is recommended that higher doses of up to 4 grams (or) multiple vaporization applications are necessary when using vaporization as a treatment method. This change may apply to all methods of application however but most specifically to the vaporization method of application. Personally, when doing a dribble or spray application I recommend 2 grams per deep with the continued 3 applications seven to ten days apart. The spray method is now approved and, in my opinion, the preferred application method of the three methods used.
The standard recipe is generally 35 grams of Oxalic Acid dihydrate to 33 oz or one liter sugar water; the sugar water mix rate is 1 water to 1 sugar mixed thoroughly with the Oxalic, and applying 5ml per seam, when using the dribble method. The same 5ml (or) three sprays (pulls on a spray bottle trigger) per frame side using a small hand held spray bottle is approximately equal to 5ml solution.
Oxalic Acid Ratio Changes per EPA Approval
Recent EPA guidance indicates that higher doses—up to 4 grams per application—or multiple vaporization treatments may be necessary when using oxalic acid via vaporization. While this adjustment may influence all application methods, it is most specifically directed toward vaporization.
For dribble or spray applications, I personally recommend using 2 grams per deep hive body, applied over three treatments spaced 7–10 days apart.
The spray method is now EPA-approved and, in my opinion, is the preferred method among the three common application techniques.
Standard Oxalic Acid Solution Recipe:
- 35 grams oxalic acid dihydrate
- 33 oz (1 liter) sugar water
- Sugar water ratio: 1:1 (water to sugar), mixed thoroughly before adding oxalic acid
Application Guidelines:
- Dribble Method: Apply 5 mL per seam of bees
- Spray Method: Apply approximately 5 mL per frame side, which is equivalent to about three trigger pulls from a standard handheld spray bottle
